Everything to Know About the Talented, Troubled Actor

Michael Pitt, star of the HBO hit series Boardwalk Empire, was reportedly hospitalized following a public "outburst" in Brooklyn last Friday.

On Thursday, TMZ reported that it had obtained video showing Pitt "strapped to a gurney and surrounded by EMS technicians." Pitt was seen being wheeled down the sidewalk on a stretcher.

The police were called because Pitt had allegedly thrown "objects at people, possibly from the rooftop of a building," according to TMZ. Although officers apprehended Pitt, he wasn't charged with anything on account of being "deemed an emotionally disturbed person." Instead, he was transported to receive treatment at a nearby hospital.

Pitt's current whereabouts are unknown, and a representative for the actor hadn't returned Newsweek's request for comment by publication time. But TMZ noted that people who are placed on an "involuntary psych hold" in New York are typically only held for up to three days.

This isn't the first time that the actor, who has remained relatively under the radar, has had a run-in with law enforcement. Here's everything that you should know about Pitt.

July Arrest

Pitt got in trouble at "the same location" in New York earlier this summer because he allegedly hit a man multiple times in the head after taking his phone from him, according to TMZ. Police then arrested Pitt for petty larceny and assault, although the man was reported to have sustained only minor injuries.

Reports of Poor On-Set Behavior

After starring on Boardwalk Empire for two seasons, Pitt's character, Jimmy Darmody, was killed off, Distractify noted. But instead of simply being a creative choice, word soon spread that the production allegedly wanted to part ways with Pitt because of his bad behavior on set.

The actor was said to be "horrendous to work with" and had issues with learning his lines, according to Distractify. Pitt's agent also apparently stopped working with him prior to his departure from the show.

Dating Life

Much of Pitt's personal life is a mystery, but the actor has been romantically linked to different industry insiders. He opened up in a 2009 Observer article about his longtime engagement to model Jamie Bochert, calling her his "other half." The two had called it quits by 2014, according to The Daily Mail.

Before Asia Argento matched with celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, the actress was engaged to Pitt from 2003 to 2004. Pitt was featured in Argento's film The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, which she'd acted in, written and directed.

Films

Just over two decades ago, Pitt made waves in Hollywood thanks to his performance in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Since then, he's earned rave reviews for films like 2007's Funny Games and Murder by Numbers in 2002. He's also embodied a Kurt Cobain-esque rock musician in Last Days and appeared in M. Night Shyamalan's The Village.

The actor has previously opened up about his career choices, telling Elle in a 2014 article: "To be honest, I make very controversial films. The films that I've made have been very, very bold choices."

He continued by claiming that he doesn't care how others view his career.

"Every movie that I've picked, from my first film on, has been considered by everyone to be 'career suicide,'" he said. "And I have an amazing life. I have an amazing career. I work with artists. But I'm not making Spider-Man."

Other Interests

Acting isn't Pitt's only talent. The Boardwalk Empire star has also modeled for Prada and released music with his band Pagoda, which reportedly broke up in 2011. Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth released Pagoda's 2007 record on his label, Ecstatic Peace.

Pitt is also said to have directed music videos for Pagoda, plus a campaign video for the 2015 spring collection of fashion brand Rag & Bone. He spoke with CBR in 2020 about directing his first feature film, the yet-to-be-released Nocturnal.
